Innovation centre to boost bamboo market

Aims to train local talents to produce global products.

KOCHI: The Bamboo Innovation Centre, to be inaugurated in Angamally on Aug 16, is expected to provide a new direction for the development of bamboo-based products in the state. Set up by the State Government owned Kerala State Bamboo Corporation Ltd (KSBCL) the centre aims at introducing globally benchmarked bamboo products and train the local craftsmen in producing such products.

The lack of application of modern technology in the sector has prevented us from taking the full advantage of bamboo wealth available in the state, says T Sukumaran Nair, managing director of KSBCL. The varieties of bamboo found in Kerala forests are also not used properly, he added. The innovation centre will provide training for the local craftsmen to become master craftsmen in globally benchmarked products and then use their services for training others.

The centre plans to undertake exhibitions of innovative bamboo products and designs, teaching local craftsmen about such designs, providing the right technology for making such products amongst its activities. Mr. Nair said the Bamboo Mission and Bamboo Corporation jointly launched a scheme to supply processed bamboo to artisans. The work on two treatment plants for the purpose is progressing, he added. The Innovation Centre will be inaugurated by Industries Minister E.P. Jayarajan near the KSBCL at Angamaly on Tuesday. Angamaly MLA Roji John will preside at the function and Chalakudy MP Innocent will deliver the keynote address.
