NEPAL is a country with rich cultural diversity that makes its people a lively bunch who strive to preserve their heritage no matter where they live and work.
To showcase their unity in diversity, around 500 Nepalese nationals put up a scintillating display of dance and cultural performances at a day-long celebration organised by Nepal Non-Resident Federation of Indigenous Nationalities Qatar Chapter (NNFIN-Qatar) to commemorate the 22nd World Indigenous Day held at the VIM Multipurpose Recreation facility in Asian Town on Friday.
A 'poetry competition in mother tongue' was also held in the first half of the show, during which participants recited poems in their local dialects. They expressed their subtle thoughts and aspirations in short yet rhymed strings of couplets in front of the Nepalese expatriate audience.
Talking to Qatar Tribune, Siyaram Choudhary, president of NNFIN-Qatar, said:"NNFIN-Qatar represents 12 indigenous communities that exist in Nepal. These are Magar, Limbu, Gurung, Rai, Tamang, Tharu, Bhujel, Sunuwar, Newar, Majhi, Sherpa and Derai. Each of these has its own strong cultural identity as showcased during the presentations of their dances and poetic expressions."
The costumes and the dance forms varied from one region to another, yet overlapping one another in terms of vigour and enthusiasm.
