Even as names of police officials continue to crop up in private discussions over their links with slain gangster Nayeem, former DGP of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh V. Dinesh Reddy added a new twist to the issue by saying that he had directed police to nab Nayeem during his tenure, but political bosses had decided otherwise.
The first retired police officer to call for a media conference on Nayeem and related issues, Mr. Reddy said he had issued a memo to the then Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) Deputy Inspector General to arrest Nayeem. “But the political executive didn’t permit him to do so,” the former police chief said. Perhaps the DIG had approached the political bosses and convinced them that Nayeem was a useful informant in anti-Left wing extremist operations.
“I congratulate the Telangana Police Department for succeeding in Nayeem issue and salute the Chief Minister for giving permission to catch him,” he said. Mr. Reddy said that he would seek Chief Minister’s appointment and explain him certain sensitive issues connected to Nayeem and the latter’s associates. The former police chief opined that police officials using Nayeem for personal gains was unpardonable.
