Money Talks: 'After the 2004 Olympics I took up a telesales job - I needed the money for training'

Derval, who is now retired from athletics, has just finished her second cook book, The Fit Foodie. The book, which was published earlier this month, includes recipes for meals and treats which largely use natural ingredients. In the book, Derval also shares her advice on how to get organised so that good food and exercise become a part of your everyday life.

Derval's first foray into the world of nutrition - Food for the Fast Lane - was published a couple of years ago. Since retiring from athletics, she has also taken up a part-time role with the Irish Rugby Union Players' Association.

What is the most important lesson about money which your career as an athlete has taught you?

I learned to deal with instability in earnings. I made good money some years and lost money in others. I got very good at budgeting because of this!

What is the most expensive thing about being a parent?

The most expensive part is childcare but having my baby with someone I trust is priceless.

Are you better off than your parents?

I have no idea.

Apart from property, what's the most expensive thing you have bought?

I bought a car last year which was probably the most expensive thing I've ever bought. It was four years old - so not crazy expensive

What was your worst job?

I did a telesales job after the 2004 Olympics because I needed the money to fund training for the next season. People were often really, really rude. It did teach me a lot about sales though.

What was your biggest financial mistake?

Probably buying a house in 2006.

What was your best financial killing?

Winning the World Indoor Championships in 2006 - I won US$60,000.

It depends on the time of the month - right now, not a lot!

No.

Have you ever switched utility provider?

Yes - I've often moved TV and internet provider.

What was the last thing you bought online?

A cookbook - I love looking at cookbooks. Maybe that's why I like to write my own!

I have a tracker mortgage.

Would you buy Irish property now?

If I had extra money to buy, yes I would - I'd buy outside Dublin.

I try to but I'm not very good at it.
