Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator from Mahalaxmi, Ratna Mahale, and some of her party workers landed in a police station on Saturday, after an FIR was registered against them for thrashing G South ward civic engineers. Reportedly, Mahale and her party workers abused and got aggressive when the junior civic engineers from the Maintenance Department started removing illegal flex banners and flags of the party.

"It was a routine exercise and we were following our seniors' orders. We tried to explain to the corporator when she approached us. But she was not ready to listen. Party worker Vishal Kesarkar got very aggressive. He started abusing us, and when we objected, he started attacking us physically. That's when we called up our seniors at the ward office," said a staffer present on the spot.

The incident took place at Lala College junction at Haji Ali. The complainants were identified as junior engineers Ravi Gupta and Prakash Sonawane. A complaint in this regard was egistered at the Tardeo police station.
Gupta said, "There was nothing personal against Mahale or her partymen. We were purely following the instructions. Unfortunately, they were not in the mood to listen," Gupta said.

Attempt to contact Mahale did not bear any results. A copy of the FIR, however, showed that sections 143, 149, 332, 353, 504 of the Indian Penal Code were slapped against Mahale and Kesarkar.

A Shiv Sena Shakha Pramukh was booked for attacking engineer Hemant Chandane six months ago. At the time, Sainath Rajadhyaksha of the Municipal Engineers Union has said that engineers had to bear the brunt because of the apathetic attitude of the civic administration. "We have been demanding that on the lines of doctors, even engineers should be protected. Attacks on engineers should be made a non-bailable offence," Rajadhyaksha said, adding that engineers will stage protest to press for their demand soon.
