Five persons booked under SC/ST Act

Five persons, including the Caste Hindu husband of a 21-year-old Dalit woman, were booked under the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act on charges of assaulting her.The case was initially registered by Sivagangai All Woman Police Station (AWPS).

On a direction from the office of the Director General of Police, it was transferred to the Thudiyalur AWPS.

Police said that the victim P. Abhinaya (21) eloped with her lover R. Sasikannan (24) to Coimbatore last November and also got married.

On February 4, 2016, Sasikannan went to meet his parents at his native village and did not return.

Abused

He and his family allegedly abused Abhinaya when she went there to see him.

Sasikannan, his father N. Raju, mother R. Kalaiselvi, sister R. Sasikala and brother-in-law S. Raja were booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, while Sasikannan was also booked under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code.
