: The district panchayat is planning a project to make Thrissur a child-friendly district with the support of UNICEF.
If implemented successfully, Thrissur will become the first child-friendly district in the State. The project gains importance as Thrissur has become the district with the lowest birth rate of girl children in the State.
The Social Welfare Board will implement the project with the support of UNICEF, said district panchayat president Sheela Vijayakumar. The Kerala Institute of Local Administration will give the guidelines for the project.
“The district panchayat has earmarked Rs.12 lakh for the project. A workshop of local body chiefs will be organised to discuss the project this month.”
A survey on education, health and safety of children below the age of 18 will be held at the panchayat level in the initial phase.
The district panchayat has plans to implement the ‘she-pad’ project at schools with the support of the Kerala State Women’s Development Corporation to distribute sanitary napkins.
A project will be prepared to construct buildings for 113 anganwadis in the district.
Meanwhile, Vigyan Sagar, a dream project of the panchayat will be inaugurated in coming January, the district panchayat president said. An amount of Rs. 2 crore has been allotted for the project. A 3D theatre will be constructed with Rs.5 lakh from the MP fund.
Another Rs.13 crore has been allotted for Skill Park, which will come up on nine acres of land. The project has been prepared with the support of Centre for Materials for Electronic Technology (C-MET) and Indian Space Research Organisation.
