Vadodara: Children admitted at the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of the SSG Hospital here had a narrow escape when a portion of the false ceiling of the ward collapsed. At least five children were admitted in the ward when the incident took place.
Sources said that the incident took place at around midnight on Friday. Sheets used for the false ceiling collapsed along with the frame used to fit them on the ceiling.
A child from Dahod admitted at the ward had a narrow escape when some debris fell on the bed where he was kept.
His relatives rushed to his aid to ensure that no more material fell on him. A ceiling fan at the ward was damaged due to the collapse.
A seepage in the ceiling of the PICU is said to be the cause behind the collapse. The structure of the building is old and has developed seepages at some places, sources said.
SSGH resident medical officer Dr B C Patel said that the ceiling was damaged only in one portion of the PICU. "There were no injuries to any child admitted there. The patients were immediately shifted to a nearby ward," said Patel.
He added that all the necessary equipment from the PICU had also been moved to the adjoining ward to ensure that intensive care did not suffer. He added that the process of repairing the ceiling had also been started.
