Gary Kubiak fumes after Broncos QBs disappoint in practice

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Most would agree Gary Kubiak is more respectful of others than other NFL head coaches. He is nicer, better mannered and more honest.

But he’s still a coach.  And coaches can be such buzzkills, sometimes.

Here everybody is pleased about the Denver Broncos in general and their quarterbacks in particular. The team smoked John Fox’s Chicago Bears, 22-0, in the preseason opener Thursday.

Mark Sanchez started with a touchdown pass on his first drive. Trevor Siemian started 3 of 3 passing. Paxton Lynch started 6 of 6.

Lynch, the first-round rookie, got some first-team reps Saturday for the first time since training camp opened 2 1/2 weeks ago.

All is well with the Broncos.

And yet when asked which quarterback would start the Broncos’ next preseason game next week against the San Francisco, Kubiak was so miffed about Saturday’s practice he sounded as if he wouldn’t start any of  them.

“I don’t know, I’m not real happy with practice today, so I’ll go look at today,’’ Kubiak said. “We’ll wake up on Monday … and we’ll go back to work. We’ll keep plugging. We are going to find the right one.”

Sanchez started out, and finished, the practice working with the No. 1 offense. Siemian got the first-team in between. Lynch mixed in with the first-teamers  for a snap  here and there before returning to this No. 3 offense.

None of them satisfied Kubiak, who no doubt is concerned his team will get a little full of itself after its fine showing in Chicago, but knowing the 49ers will be much more competitive next week during the two practices Wednesday and Thursday here at the UCHealth Training Center and game Saturday at soon-to-be-renamed Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

“We didn’t practice very well offensively,” Kubiak said. “We’re less than 48 hours out of a game and to come back and practice is tough. We handled it defensively, but we didn’t handle it offensively. It’s disappointing for me.”
