VS Achuthanandan calls KM Mani corrupt to core, IUML communal

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 13 (PTI): Veteran Marxist leader V S Achuthanandan today took a swipe at Kerala Congress (M), which had recently severed ties with Opposition Congress-led UDF, saying the party’s supremo K M Mani was corrupt to the core. Achuthanandan also described another UDF ally IUML as a “communal party”. His remarks comes close on the heels of an article by CPI(M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan in party organ ‘Deshabhimani’ that the Marxist party will not allow BJP to reap benefits of the KC-M breaking its over 30-year-old ties with UDF.

The KC(M) had come out of the UDF, last week stating that it would keep equidistant from LDF, UDF and NDA. While Balakrishnan had also told reporters that while LDF had no plans to include any more parties in the Front as of now, they were not averse to having any issue based cooperation with KC(M). The Deshabhimani in an editorial had also stated that to protect secularism and fight communal forces, like-minded parties should come together.

When asked for his reaction, Achuthanandan told reporters here that Kerala has already declared Mani to be “highly corrupt”. He also described IUML as the ‘biggest’ communal party and with such party’s CPI(M) can never go together, he said. Mani, who was a former Finance minister in the Oommen Chandy cabinet was forced to quit in the wake of the Bar Bribery scam.
