Soon, Delhi Metro to be made totally sound proof

New Delhi: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has implemented a world class technology known as mass spring system (MSS) that cuts down noise arising due to track vibrations. DMRC which is constructing 159.5km of tracks under Phase-III, will soundproof around 53.8 km of this network, that is, all the underground sections.

“The mass spring system (MSS) will be used at locations within 25m of the horizontal distance of the tunnel and within 15m of the top of the tunnel. The use of MSS helps minimise the transmission of vibra tions, which are structureborne noise, to surrounding structures. Head-hardened rails are being used for the main lines. A total of 38,000MT of rails is required in Phase-III. This is being procured from reputed manufacturing units in Austria, Japan, France and Russia,” said Delhi Metro Rail Corporation spokesperson Anuj Dayal.

The underground sections of Phase-III, such as Line 6: Central Secretariat to Kashmere Gate; Line 7: Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar; and Line 8: Janakpuri west to Kalindi Kunj, will have MSS in place. How this works is quite simple: the track slab in the tunnel is separated from the supporting structure elastically , using a micro-cellular polyurethane elastomer.
