Ward level survey begins to assess living conditions of migrant workers

KOZHIKODE: City corporation authorities have commenced ward-level survey to collect details about the number of houses rented out to migrant workers to assess facilities provided to them by the building owners. The move was taken on the basis of a recent inspection conducted by health staff that was detected lack of basic facilities at houses given to migrant workers for rent.
Health inspectors will collect data regarding number of people residing at a rented houses, occupation details, and education and health aspects as part of the survey.
Civic body has decided to take stern actions against owners renting out to buildings and houses without providing adequate facilities to migrant workers.
Corporation health inspector P Abdul Khader said they have detected migrant workers living in miserable conditions. ``We have warned stern actions against the erring building owners who have failed to ensure even basic facilities such as toilets and water to the migrant workers ,’’ he said adding that the problem is that migrant workers are not ready to register complaints about the inadequate facilitates provided to them at rented houses. Meanwhile, health standing committee chairman K V Baburaj said the findings of the survey will be utilised to chalk out effective programmes for the welfare of migrant workers and to take action to improve the living conditions of them.
