August 13, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:21 am IST - SALEM:

The police arrested the husband of Narasingapuram municipal councillor on charges of demanding money from a person and threatening him, here on Friday.

Meena is the councillor of ward 13 and her husband A. Thiyagarajan is involved in real estate business.

T. Vetrivel, owner of an 1.5-acre land in the area, recently began constructing compound wall.

But Thiyagarajan interrupted and said that Vetrivel had encroached two feet of the government land.

The work was halted and a government surveyor measured the land and found no encroachments in June. However, Thiyagarajan demanded Rs. 25,000 from Vetrivel and received Rs. 20,000.

On August 10, Vetrivel increased the height of the compound wall and Thiyagarajan again sought Rs. 50,000.

Thiyagarajan threatened him too. Unwilling to give the money,

Vetrivel lodged a complaint with the Attur DSP. After inquiry, the Attur police registered a case and arrested Thiyagarajan.

He was produced in the court and later lodged at prison.
