MALDA: Peace TV does not have a licence to beam in the country , but the channel and its controversial face Zakir Naik are very much on air in parts of Bengal along the Bangladesh border. The administration is worried by reports that parts of Malda and Murshidabad regularly tune into Naik. In the evening, tea stalls, paan shops and certain madrassas screen Naik's show.
This triggers security concerns as the border areas are notorious as a channel for smuggled guns, drugs and fake currency.
Several terror operatives and linkmen have been arrested by NIA and BSF here and security agencies are constantly on the lookout for terror modules. Officials say several unauthorized madrassas are under the intelligence scanner here.
The four big cable operators -Hathway , Manthan, CCN and Siti Cable -have complained that local cable operators are playing foul. The big cable operators say they have stopped broadcasting Peace TV but local operators in remote areas are bypassing the ban in Kaliachak and Baishnabnagar of Malda and Suti, Samsergunj and Aurangabad of Murshidabad.
Milan Chakraborty of CCN and Siti Cable alleged: "Not only Peace TV , these operators are also showing pornographic films at night. We have repeatedly informed the administration regarding this. This must be stopped." Goutam Dutta of Hathway in Malda said: "Reputable operators have to follow the guidelines of the I&B ministry, but some local MSOs are indulging in such practices. It is dangerous."
Additional district magistrate Debatosh Mandal confirmed receiving the complaint. "We're looking into the complaint very seriously."
BJP district secretary Amitava Maitra said: "There is the hand of anti-India forces behind this racket. We have informed the district administration and our party leadership. We'll soon inform the Union home ministry."
