NEET answer keys disappoint students

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) answer keys (NEET1 and NEET2), issued on August 8, have unleashed more chaos in the medical admissions as students have found discrepancies in them. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has also given students an option of challenging the answers till the 10 August, in case of any discrepancies, by paying Rs 1,000. Students have raised concerns over five questions. According to procedure, if he/she is proved right, then this money will be reimbursed.

Due to the discrepancies, not only will students have to put up with a wrong score and rank, they will also have to pay a hefty fine for it. Students say that in competitive exams such as these, one wrong or right answer can decide their future. The disputed question numbers are 67, 79, 146 and 179 in Chemistry, and 135 in Biology. “Such discrepancies can cause a huge difference in ranks,” says Harshini R, a medical aspirant from the city.

Another student, Jatin Ramesh, has the same thoughts. “Here, one correct answer gets us four marks and one wrong answer costs a negative mark. A single question makes a huge difference,” he says adding that his KCET rank was 159, and there were 35 people in the state with the same score. He said this was the kind of competition in a national exam like NEET, where hundreds of students may share a rank.

There were four sets of question papers for the NEET-2 exam conducted on 24 July 2016 .Of all the question paper sets used then, sets AA ,CC and DD are the ones where students have found discrepancies.

The results of the NEET 2016 are expected to be out on 17 August 2016. Soon after the result announcement, the main counselling and registration is scheduled for four days on 22-25 August 2016. The first round of allotment is expected to be on 27 August, and students who accept the seats will have to report to the allotted colleges between 28 August and 3 September 2016. Further to this, the results of the second rounds of allotments will be published on 12 September 2016.
