MJ Akbar says attacks on foreigners not racist

New Delhi, Aug 12 (UNI) Minister of State for External Affairs M J Akbar said that the recent attacks on foreigners were perpetrated by the criminals and anti-social elements of the society at some plavrs in the country and those must not be construed as racist attacks.
In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Mr Akbar said state governments were sensitised of the need to ensure safety of foreigners and take necessary action against the perpetrators. He said that such incidents generated negative publicity that adversely affected the image of the country and there should be no tolerance in such incidents.
Citing the incidents of violence against Africans, the Minister said his ministry had written to all state governments, those having large numbers of Africans, to take safety and security measures including increased police patrolling, community sensitisation and interactions.
