BHOPAL: Gone are the days of dacoits with twirling moustaches in Chambal ravines. Criminals in ravine district of Morena are now making money by lifting vehicles. It is a win-win: no risk and high returns.
About 150 bikes have been recovered from a gang of vehicle lifter from ravines active in the neighbouring states of UP and Rajasthan besides MP.
On Thursday, one more person was arrested and 50 stolen bikes were recovered after his interrogation.

Police sources said that the vehicle lifters are active across the districts of Chambal division sharing border with the three states.
“Together they must have stolen more than 1,000 two-wheelers, including bikes which are in demand. During interrogation, gang members said they lift bikes and park them in villages located in ravines. Their agents spread across the three states approach them with demand of a specific bike and the stolen vehicle is supplied,” sources claimed.
Some times a Rs 70,000-bike is sold for in less than Rs 10,000.
About 6 months ago, Karua and Giriraj Singh Gurjar were arrested with 72 stolen bikes. Each of them had Rs 5,000 reward on them.

They told police, “It is easier to break a lock of bikes then opening it with a key. Rather it takes less time to break it.”
“The bikes recovered on Thursday belonged to the same gang that operates from Camera village located deep inside ravines,” said SP Morena Vineet Khanna.
All of them belonged to the age group of 25 to 30 year, he said.
“Stealing bike seems to be more lucrative for them than operating a gang in Chambal ravine in gruelling weather conditions,” he said.
After a tip-off, police first arrested Bhola Gurjar, a vehicle lifter. On interrogation, 50 bikes were recovered from agriculture fields, residents of villagers and godowns in Camera.
Karua and Giriraj were arrested with 72 vehicles in the past and are already in jail. Other gang members Devendra, Bhola and Lokendra Singh Gurjar are on the run, police said.
