Surat: Six people were arrested for kidnapping builder Nazir Dingmar, who was rescued by police from Aurangabad and brought back to Nani Daman on Thursday. Extortion was the reason for which the prominent builder of Daman was kidnapped.
The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of Rs 5 crore for his release from family members.
Those arrested were identified as Etara Alaudian Sheikh (32), Izhar Ahmed Sheikh (30), Nazim Sheikh (25), Mauddin Sheikh (22), Zubair Sheikh (26), and Salim Sheikh (21).
Valsad local crime branch and Maharashtra police had assisted Daman police in the operation.
Nani Daman police said after they received a phone call from the son of Nazir Dingmar about his being kidnapped a couple of days ago, they started investigations in the case immediately.
"Our sources tipped us about Etara Sheikh and we picked him up. He led us to Izhar Sheikh and his interrogation revealed us that the victim was kept in an apartment in Aurangabad. Four more accused were picked up from the spot," a police officer said.

"The conspiracy was hatched by Etara Sheikh in Nani Daman as he owed a lot of money to several people in the United Kingdom. He was into gambling and used to frequent casinos there. He talked about his plan with Izhar Sheikh, who is wanted in Arms Act and cases of robbery in Daman and kidnapping in Maharashtra, and he agreed to join him," Daman superintendent of police Meghna Yadav said, adding that Rs 3 crore was to be kept by Itara as his share.
Dingmar was kidnapped from outside a masjid in Daman and taken to Aurangabad after he was given some sedatives by the accused.
Yadav said, "We will present the six accused in a court and seek their maximum remand. We have asked Maharashtra police to provide us record of their crime there."
