Atheists visit University students

Atheists in Kenya (AIK), the first and only society of its kind in the country, recently engaged with students from Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology in the hope of encouraging debate on religion and philosophy.

The forum, which was held on August 6, 2016 attracted hundreds of students from the university. Announcements about the event, were however, met with spite and ridicule, as students condemned what they saw as an open challenge to Christianity.

But this is nothing new, according to Harrison Mumia, President of AIK.

“It is something I have had to deal with personally. Atheism is still equated to devil worship in Kenya, and this is one of the perceptions we are trying to change,” he says. He adds that: “We believe universities should be at the forefront in encouraging intelligent debate and making people think
