Kashmir unrest enters 35th day, mobile networks, internet services suspended

Curfew and restrictions entered its 35th day in Kashmir with the government stalling movement in sensitive zones to prevent protests by separatists leaders.

Private telephone and mobile data services were suspended. Police announced that curfew would continue in all the ten district headquarters in the Valley, along with Handwara, Kupwara, Sopore, Trehgam and Qaimoh.

Senior separatist leaders like Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik continued to remain under preventive detention in Srinagar.

The security measures came after separatists yet again called and extended the protests till August 18. Separatists called for a complete shutdown but asked people to resume normal activities between 6 pm and 6 am on certain days.

Kashmir has been on the boil after Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani was killed in an encounter with security forces. 57 people, including 55 civilians and two policemen have been killed till now, in the protests that began on July 9.
