‘Destiny: Rise Of Iron’: Bungie Brings Kvostov Gun Back As An Exotic, Hints At Secret On Felwinter Peak

Guardians continue to gear up for the new Destiny: Rise of Iron expansion.

It seems like forever ago that Destiny was revealed to the masses. When players got their hands on the game, they were taken through the first mission where their Ghost pointed out their very first gun: the Khvostov 7G-02. It was abandoned shortly after the initial skirmish against the enemy, thrown to the wind in favor of more uncommon weapons. With this in mind, there’s a certain nostalgia about the starting inventory for those who dove into the game for the first time. Bungie is aware of this, and has decided to bring the Khvostov 7G-02 back to the game in a major way.

In a report by Geek, it’s been confirmed that Destiny will see the Khvostov 7G-02 return as an exotic, the highest rarity of an equip that the player can use. Exotic weapons aren’t as easy to come by as others, usually involving a great amount of tasks over a certain period of time to obtain. Players should be familiar with the process, as some of the best weapons in the game have involved waiting for weekly resets.

This isn’t the first time that we’ve seen a seemingly pointless weapon return as something great. Destiny usually involves some sort of questline that urges players to pick up a certain item or gun. After that, a set of tasks is given to the player in order for them to be able to advance to the next section of its completion. While the amount of time and effort can prove tedious, the payoff is worth it. Exotic weapons are the best of what Destiny has to offer. It makes raids easier, and also becomes a collector’s prized possession.

In a report by Game Informer, developers touch on why they chose to bring the Khvostov 7G-02 back as an exotic. Bungie’s art director, Shiek Wang, and lead designer, Ryan Paradis, had this to say about the gun’s rise to current Destiny standard.

“I think it was very much like, ‘Hey, we need an old weapon that speaks to European design language, pick this reference, use it, make it look broken.’ And then we moved on to designing other things,” Wang stated.

The Khvostov 7G-02 saw guardians through their first ambush, and players have not forgotten that fact. There are even players who still have the gun, though it’s most likely stored in the vault due to it being overshadowed by anything else that has a trigger. Bungie took note of this, and the feedback is what fueled their desire to make Destiny’s first gun an exotic.

“We really wanted to pay homage to that,” lead designer Paradis stated. “Let’s tug at the heartstrings a little bit. Let’s give this gun a little bit more fiction and purpose. It’s one of the true military weapons we have in the game that really feels like an assault rifle, so it was kind of neat for us to bring that back.”

The Khvostov 7G-02 is going to be brought back through a series of quests, mostly a shout out to the nostalgia of the game’s first moments. You won’t be able to pick it all up in one go, as exotic quests are far more complex. Instead, Bungie has decided to urge players to maintain parts of the Khvostov 7G-02 through exploration and discovery.

“We gave it a brand new barrel and made it look really new,” says Wang about the new exotic. “We thought it would be fun to actually swap out the scope, because if you remember the scope was broken. But we also thought it would be fun to have the original one, which is the broken scope that everyone identifies with. So there is a brand new scope and the old scope, and we have those as two different perks. If you want the old scope to be really OG, you can have that, but then the rest of the body looks brand new.”

The Khvostov 7G-02 will be able to switch between auto, semi, and burst fire modes. This will make the gun preferable to any who use it, adding versatility to the perks that come with it.

There’s also the matter of Felwinter Peak containing a secret. According to Bungie, there will be bells located throughout the social hub. Much like ghosts, players can interact with the bells. If a certain sequence is done, reps are tossing suggestion that perhaps something special will occur.

You can see the Khvostov 7G-02 and more when Destiny: Rise of Iron hits consoles on September 20 of this year.
