In the midst of kidney racket controversy, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital performed its second heart transplant after a 45-year-old Punekar's family gave its consent to donate his organs after he was declared brain dead at Pune's Ruby Hall hospital. This will be the 26th heart transplant since the heart transplant programme took off in August 2015.

According to the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC), the 45-year-old man was a road accident victim and brought to Ruby Hall hospital in an unconscious state. After doctors declared him brain dead, the family was approached to know their willingness for organ donation. The donated heart gave a new lease of life to a 51-year-old man, who had a heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy.

"The recipient registered with us a month ago. He is from Vadodara and has been staying at his relative's place in Mulund," Dr Rekha Barot, organ transplant coordinator KDAH.

She added that the donor heart was retrieved and brought to the hospital via a private jet in 59 minutes. The donor's family also donated the liver, which was transplanted on a patient in Pune.

Currently, six city hospital has the license for carrying out heart transplant. Fortis hospital has conducted 24 heart transplants and Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital did one.
