Green Police girls to carry khadi flags
GUWAHATI: Nagaon district's Green Police, comprising 25 girls from the state-run Nagaon Bengali Girls' High School, want to send a noble message to the people this Independence Day when they get felicitated by the deputy commissioner for their eco-friendly initiatives to save the earth.
Each student will carry a tricolour made of khadi paper and not plastic.
They will also be carrying flags made of hand-made paper. They feel plastic flags pollute the environment. Biodegradable paper is always a better alternative and ecologically safe. Khadi would represent the true essence of the tricolour and also carry a message of empowerment for khadi workers.
"The idea came to use when we saw plastic flags being strewn around after Independence Day. This is sad as they harm the environment. We want to carry khadi flags as khadi is a symbol of the independence movement. When we purchase khadi, we give a boost to khadi workers," said Anandita Bose, a class IX student and team leader of Green Police.
In the last one year, the girls have come up with a number of initiatives in support of the environment and public health.
"The Green Police will be given a certificate of recognition by the district administration," said Nripen Sarma, engineer, Nagaon PHED, and water conservationist.
