UK district on high alert over I-Day celebrations

KARWAR: Uttara Kannada police have beefed up security around sensitive place s like Kaiga Nuclear Power station and INS Kadamba naval base in Karwar in view of Independence Day celebrations on Monday. The superintendent of police has issued an advisory in this regard.
Police took this precaution in view of warnings of sabotage by terror organizations on Independence Day and also based on the intel that Kaiga nuclear power station, the naval base, some hydro-electric stations, dams and the commercial port in Karwar are on the hit list of terror groups, sources said.Police have requested the public to inform the SP's office, nearest police station or the control room if they come across suspicious persons or materials. Police have also requested the public not to allow unknown persons in their locality and not to rent their houses to the unknown persons. Any information provided by the public regarding security issues would be kept secret, the notification said.
The office of SP, in its note, has said that police will be on high alert in public places like bus and railway stations, cinema theatres, radio stations, office of the deputy commissioner, courts and other establishments associated with state and Union government. All important venues will be sanitized and will be checked by a bomb disposal squad.
Places like Karwar, Gokarna and Murudeshwar in Uttara Kannada, where foreign tourists arrive in big numbers, will be kept under special supervision, the sources said. Police have requested people not to heed to rumours and maintain restraint in cases of emergency. People are requested to cooperate with police during security checks.
Reliable sources said precautions are being taken as Karwar has many important nuclear and defence establishments. Most of these establishments are being guarded by CISF or defence personnel and have multi-tier security arrangements. Local police look after security outside the boundaries of these establishments. But there is continuous input from intelligence agencies as the district has sensitive locations like Bhatkal from where many terror suspects have been arrested and there is suspicion that sleeper cells of some terror networks are active in the district.
