Sequeira emphasizes on need for waste segregation
PANAJI: The Calangute panchayat has decided to start collecting wet and dry waste separately, said deputy sarpanch Joseph Sequeira.
Talking at a women’s meeting held at the Calangute panchayat hall on Thursday to seek the co-operation of women from Calangute to make the village garbage free, Sequeira said that now, with a solid waste management facility (SWMF) at Calangute, the garbage situation had improved to an extent.
But with mixed waste being sent to the facility, its operation is being hampered. Sending wet and dry waste separately would enhance the operations, he said pointing out that the panchayat has already distributed separate bins for the purpose.
Staff of the SWMF explained how pure wet waste will go a long way in generating methane gas which is needed to run the power generation unit at the facility. They also said that they recover a lot of clothes from the garbage sent from Calangute and suggested that people give old clothes to the Calangute panchayat, which could then forward the same to the HWMC to be recycled.
Panch member Subhash Salgaonkar said that he meeting was held exclusively for women as making them aware of the need to separate waste will go a long way in solving the garbage problem in Calangute. Bardez Mahila Shakti Abhiyan president Geeta Parab and doctors from the Candolim health centre also spoke. tnn The Calangute panchayat has decided to start collecting wet and dry waste separately, said deputy sarpanch Joseph Sequeira.
