Music Review: Iru Mugan

Except for two songs, Harris doesnt really make an impact with this album.

Review: The album opens with Halena by Christopher Stanley, Abhay Jodhpurkar and Ujjayinee Roy, a song thats already become a hit with listeners. The hip-hop sound and repetitive usage of phrases hook you, and all the three singers have rendered it in different styles, adding variation to the repetitive phrases.
Still, this one needs some time to grow on you. Oh Maya by NC Karunya and Ramya NSK sounds very much like many other songs from the Harris stable.
But unlike Halena, this one is an instantly likeable melody. The song has interesting interludes, especially the veena and saxophone bits. Kannai Vittu by Tipu (who is singing in a high-profile film after a long time), Pravin Saivi and Srimathumitha is a catchy melody. The latters humming adds a different layer to this melody, which is backed by an interesting string section and a flute interlude. A song that is sure to make it to the charts. Iru Mugan Settai by Kavithai Gundar Emcee Jesz, Steeve Vatz and Maalavika Manoj is a typical fast-beat number with hip hop and rap elements that has been done to death in Kollywood.
Neither the sound nor the music feels new. Just passable. The album ends with the Face Off Theme by Maria Roe Vincent. It is power-packed and should work well with the films storyline. The keys and Marias haunting vocals are what make it work. Except for two songs, Harris doesnt really make an impact with this album.
