PETA wants to give Australia's 'Eggs and Bacon Bay' a more vegan-friendly name
Eggs and Bacon Bay, on the southeastern coast of Tasmania, got its name—according to local lore—after pioneer and traveler Lady Jane Franklin ate bacon and eggs in the area in the 1800s.
Now, in 2016, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is not happy about the name. In fact, they've requested that the area change its name to something more “vegan-friendly”: Apple and Cherry Bay.
PETA has some ground to stand on: The Huon area of Tasmania is well-known for its apple and cherry production. PETA has shared that they believe the name change will encourage the local fruit industry.
“Considering the high levels of cholesterol and saturated fat in both eggs and bacon, the area may as well be called ‘Heart Attack Bay,’” said Ashely Fruno, PETA's Australia associate director of campaigns, in a statement, titled "Animal Right Group Asks Huon Valley Council 'WTF?': 'Where's the Fruit?'"
If the new name is approved, PETA is offering to give residents vegan apple pies.
