PUNE: A resident of Pandharpur succumbed to swine flu-induced complications at Noble hospital in Hadapsar on Tuesday. This is the ninth swine flu casualty reported from city hospitals so far this year. The last swine flu death in Pune was recorded in April.
The woman developed influenza-like symptoms from July 2. She had fever with chills and cough but she didn't seek medical care.
She later developed breathlessness following which she was admitted to a private hospital in Phaltan, Satara. The hospital, in turn, referred her to a tertiary care hospital in Akluj the same day.
However, her condition deteriorated and she was shifted to Noble hospital on July 11. Her X-ray showed that she had developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The senior citizen was put on ventilator support on July 12. On August 9, she suffered a cardiac arrest and could not be revived.
"She had underlying medical conditions like diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. She succumbed to swine flu induced ARDS with sepsis and multi-organ failure at around 5.20pm," said a civic health official.
This is the ninth swine flu casualty in Pune so far this year. Of the nine, three were residents of Pune city while the rest were referred to hospitals in the city for tertiary care treatment. As many as 26 people have tested positive for the virus in the city so far, this year.
