GANDHINAGAR: Chief minister Vijay Rupani on Wednesday honoured exemption from toll tax beginning August 15 as promised by his predecessor Anandiben Patel a few days before she called it quits.
“In a meeting chaired by CM Vijay Rupani on Wednesday, the government has decided to waive toll tax charged from non-commercial vehicles and state transport buses at 12 major state road toll-booths beginning this Independence day on August 15,“ DyCM and government spokesperson Nitin Patel said.

After being sworn-in as CM, Rupani on Monday had conceded that rolling out toll tax exemption may take some time. Later, probably sensing popular public sentiment, decision in favor of scrapping toll tax was taken.
Four-wheeler vehicles including cars, jeeps, and three-wheelers along with state transport buses will be exempt from paying toll tax.
“The decision will benefit more than 86,000 vehicle owners daily. It will also help in reducing fares of the ST buses,“ Patel added.
Exemption will result in a loss of Rs 150 crore to the state exchequer. The DyCM clarified that the toll booth waiver will be applicable only on state highways and not on national highways.
“Toll tax waiver will not be applicable on national highways as they do not fall in state government's jurisdiction,“ Patel said.
