Jamaicans still proud of Alia

Alia Atkinson finished eighth in the finals of

the women's 100m breaststroke in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, last night, clocking a time of 1:08:10. Despite her last-place finish, social media was flooded with praises for the history-making swimmer.

The 27-year-old has already gone down in the history books as the first Jamaican swimmer, and the first black woman ever to medal at a global swimming tournament, having won the silver medal at the FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2012. She shares the world record of 1:02.36 in the event with Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania.

Atkinson was trending on Twitter last night, with 14,200 tweets.
