Garhwa: Two children drowned in a check dam constructed by the forest department near Alkar village under Nagar Untari police station area, police said on Wednesday.
Krishna Ghasi (8) and Pawan Ghasi (7), both Class II students of Alkar primary school, drowned while bathing in the dam.
Sources said the children had gone to take bath in the check dam after returning from school on Tuesday evening.
The children drowned in a well that was in the middle of the dam. Their parents had gone to Nagar Untari to sell firewood.
The villagers had demanded filling up of the well when the check dam was being constructed, but the forest department officials ignored their demands, said a villager. "The children could not have drowned, if the well was filled at the time of dam construction," said villagers Sanjay Ghasi, Raj Kumar and Lalji. The check dam has knee-deep water whereas the well is about 10-ft deep.
