Lucknow: Hundreds of sanitary workers who gathered near LMC head office in Lalbagh to hold a demonstration pelted stones and slung mud at police after a lathi charge on Wednesday.
Within a few minutes, the entire Darulshafa Road was littered with mud, garbage, sludge and sewage. Traffic movement came to a halt because of the fight between police and LMC workers. Besides causing panic, several vehicles parked on the roadside got damaged while workers were injured severely.
Additional municipal commissioner Avneesh Saxena said, "The workers had already warned us that if their demands were not met, they would litter the roads." As per the plan, the workers had brought mud and waste with them and started throwing it at police. Some workers threw even carcasses on the road.
The sanitary workers have been demanding revoking of reservation policy in their appointment and also to bring a few contractual workers on permanent rolls. Nagar Nigam Karmachari Sangh president Anand Verma said, "We just wanted to submit our memorandum to LMC and the lathi charge was uncalled for. We have announced a strike for an indefinite period. No worker will go on duty till the CM and LMC authorities accept our demands."
He said many of his colleagues were injured in the oppression while police maintained that only a few of them were hurt. Hazratganj police station inspector Vijaymal Yadav said the LMC workers were trying to move towards Vidhan Sabha, so police resorted to lathi charge, in which around 12 persons sustained minor injury.
