Borussia Dortmund seek to clarify confusion over Marco Reus return date

Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel has caused confusion about the date Marco Reus will return from injury after claiming the forward would not return in mid-August, something the club have since attempted to clarify.

Reus, 27, suffered an adductor injury in Dortmund's defeat to Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal final in May. The injury kept him out of the Germany squad at Euro 2016, with reports in June saying he could miss four months of action.

Tuchel told journalists following Borussia Dortmund's 1-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday that he doesn't expect Reus to return to training within the next seven days.

He said: "Marco Reus will not be back in team training in mid-August. That would surprise me."

But Dortmund have since contradicted Tuchel's claim in a statement on their official website, in which sporting director Michael Zorc and team doctor Markus Braun confirmed Reus is "on course" to return to training in the middle of August.

Reus is due to return to training next week but will only be involved in part sof team exercises due to his long absence, the club said.

The forward missed all three of BVB's preseason camps, instead working alone on his comeback. The club returned from their final training camp in Bad Ragaz in Switzerland on Wednesday.

The club will host Bayern Munich in the German Super Cup on Sunday. Tuchel, however, said he would prefer to forgo the curtain-raiser against the Bundesliga champions.

"After today's performance I could do without the Super Cup. Our expectations must not be too high," he told journalists after a poor performance in the friendly defeat against Bilbao.
