Allegedly deserted by her husband and two sons over the years, she went over to her daughter-in-law’s house, offering an olive branch, but spiked the lunch and killed them in cold blood
Rashida Akbarali Vasani couldn’t take any more abandonment. Allegedly deserted by her husband and two sons over the years, the 56-year-old resident of Mumbra directed her pent-up frustration at her younger daughter-in-law and her mother. She finally went over the edge on Monday evening, when she spiked their lunch and slit their throats in cold blood.

Police question neighbours at the couple’s house in Kausa, Mumbra
Rashida surrendered before the police immediately after the murders.
She told the police that Salma (24) married her son, Makhdoom Vasani (30), four years ago. But Salma and Rashida failed to get along, and in just a few months of the marriage, the couple moved out of the home in Hyder Baug to a flat in Kausa, Mumbra. The estrangement only made Rashida even more bitter. She blamed Salma and her mother, Shamim Latif Shaikh (45), who resided in Kohinoor City, Kurla, for instigating Makhdoom to separate from her, and even accused them of practising black magic on him.

The in-laws continued to harbour ill-feeling towards each other, and picked up arguments at every interaction.
The last straw
“On August 6, Rashida visited the couple’s home. During a heated argument, the couple behaved rudely with her, and she slapped her son twice. She left the place fuming,” said MN Patil, inspector of Mumbra police station.

She then hatched the plan to kill Salma and Shamin, who had moved into the couple’s home recently for some post-natal rituals of her daughter. “Salma had given birth to a girl, her second child, 45 days ago.”
Planning the murders
Over the weekend, Rashida bought some soporific drugs and two knives. She crushed the pills and went to Salma’s house again on Monday, pretending to make amends. Makhdoom was at work.
Right before lunch, she laced the sabzi and the dessert with the drugs, said Patil. “Around 5 pm, Salma and Shamim began to lose consciousness. Rashida claimed that Shamim was in the kitchen at the time. She hit Shamim with the wooden handle of a knife and then slit her throat.”
'Ab teri baari'
Rashida then lunged at Salma, yelling, “Ab teri baari”, and slit her throat as well. “Shamim was still fighting for breath when her daughter was killed. After committing the murders, Salma approached the Mumbra police with Salma’s two children and confessed to her crime,” said Patil.
A calm Rashida asked the police to feed the children first. “We took the children in our care and then visited the scene of the crime,” said the inspector. The police recovered the two knives used in the murders, the packet of powdered drug and leftovers from the lunch, among others, from the flat. Rashida was arrested at 3 am yesterday. She was produced before the Thane sessions court and remanded in police custody for seven days.
