T

he Indonesian community living and working in London enjoyed a traditional angklung music performance from the 40 Days in Europe group on Sunday as part of Independence Day celebrations.

Held at Indonesian Ambassador to the UK and the Republic of Ireland Rizal Sukma's official residence in London, the 40 performers from West Java played traditional songs such as “Jali Jali”, “Angin Mamiri” and "Bengawan Solo".

Group coordinator Maulana M. Syuhada revealed that the group had ended up having to rent equipment for the show after its own equipment was left behind at its previous destination in Scotland.

“We haven’t had the chance to take a break, or even bathe,” he told Antara news agency.

Prior to coming to London, the group performed at the Aberdeen International Youth Festival

in Scotland and is set to continue its journey to France, Belgium, Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland to participate in other festivals including the International Folklore Festival in Cerveny Kostelec in the Czech Republic and the International Festival of Highland Folklore in Zakopane, Poland.

The story of Maulana and his students performing around Europe, which sprang from a passionate desire to revive the long-abandoned traditional instrument from West Java, was published in a 2007 book entitled 40 Days in Europe; a movie with the same title is slated for release this year. (kha/kes)
