While chief minister Devendra Fadnavis launched the Quit India 2 campaign to fight against 5 evils — corruption, illiteracy, farmers' suicides, water wastage and addictions, Opposition Congress-NCP criticised the initiative by saying that those who did not participate in freedom movement are trying to rewrite history to undermine Quit India movement.

The department of culture organised a programme at August Kranti Maidan near Nana Chowk to mark 74 years of Quit India movement. Minister of finance Sudhir Mungantiwar gave oath to school and college students to fight against all these social evils. Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu, minister for culture Vinod Tavde, minister for housing Prakash Mehta, minister for tourism Jaikumar Raval, minister of state for women and child development Vidya Thakur and local MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha were present at the event.

Minister Vinod Tavde said that Congress and Sanjay Nirupam have the habit to criticise BJP, but they should understand that while in Opposition the BJP was organising the programme without pandals in a small corner at August Kranti Maidan.

Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) president Sanjay Nirupam along with MLC Bhai Jagtap led the demonstrations against the government. Nirupam said that BJP and RSS never participated in the freedom movement and had opposed Mahatma Gandhi. He said that those who never had any role in freedom movement are trying to hijack the Quit India movement by rewriting history.

NCP organised a rally to mark August Kranti Din and party leader Jayant Patil criticised BJP for trying to rewrite history. He said that those who opposed Mahatma Gandhi are trying to cash in on Quit India movement. Patil also said that those who never visited August Kranti Maidan are now organising programmes just rewrite history.

Nirupam alleged that BJP leaders have insulted the national anthem since they did not play it at the pandal where the government programme was to be held. Tavde as well as BJP Mumbai city unit president Ashish Shelar refuted the allegation. Shelar said that playing the anthem by the Congress before the programme without any intimation to anyone was an offence.
