The Bharatiya Janata Party workers staged a protest in front of the Mangaluru City Corporation on Tuesday accusing the Congress of failing to provide better administration in the corporation.

Addressing the gathering, Roopa Bangera, Leader of the Opposition BJP in the Corporation Council, alleged that the corporation has failed to create enough parking facilities in the city.

Though the number of vehicles was on the rise, the corporation has failed to build parking lots, she said.

Staff shortage

Ms. Bangera said that there was 68 per cent staff shortage in the civic body.

Though the Congress was leading the corporation and the same party is in power in the State, both have not been able to get vacant posts filled.

She alleged that drinking water supply was not proper in many wards.

Though the government took up underground drainage (UGD) project in the city a decade ago by availing of loan from the Asian Development Bank, the project is yet to be completed. Many wet wells built under the project were not up to the mark in quality.

Without completing Phase I of the project, the corporation has now announced a move to take up Phase II of the project again by drawing loan from the ADB.

She alleged that solid waste was not being collected from the doorsteps of all houses in the city. Main roads are not being swept daily.

The BJP alleged that the corporation has not built footpaths on many roads upgraded as concrete roads. Pedestrians have been forced to walk on the road.
