MIRI: DAP Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon has urged the new Miri City Council (MCC) mayor and councillors to take a bolder move to change the way they work, saying it is important to improve the people’s confidence in MCC.

“After the state election, the people have had a long wait for the Local Government Ministry to sort out the list of mayors and chairmen as well as councillors. The long wait which lasted about three months has, in fact, caused a lot of inconvenience because there are a lot of pending issues that need to be sorted out.

“My suggestion to the city council, would be increasing the hotline to enable the public to easily contact any department/section of the city council should they have any issue. More importantly, it is best to unveil the contacts of councillors so that the people can easily approach them,” he said in a statement released on Monday.

On the appointment of mayors, chairmen and councillors, Dr Ting hoped Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Sim Hui Kian could come up with a statement to give a clearer explanation on it.

“I am sure that the people are curious and anxious to learn and understand the screening and selection procedure.”

Dr Ting stressed that with the formation of PH Community Council comprising seven PH councillors – Mustapha Erol (Amanah), Peter Hii (DAP), Sim Siew Chieng (DAP), Ling Siew Ping (DAP), Hellan Empaing (DAP), Jemat Panjang (PKR) and Kho Bee Kiong (PKR) – could approach and help the local community better.

“Not only we hope to serve the people, its other role is to closely monitor the city council,” he clarified.
