Lies, Lies and Propaganda and Suspicious Woman Productions present ORPHEUS.

"All the little devils are proud of hell" - Wake in Fright

On the day of her wedding Eurydice dies. To reclaim her Orpheus, the greatest musician in the world, plunges into the underworld. But this place is nothing like he expected. There's a bar, the Sheriff is inviting him to perform at the local talent show, and the next bus out of town doesn't come until Thursday.

Sydney's most innovative indie theatre company Lies, Lies and Propaganda - in association with Suspicious Woman Productions - builds on its previous work creating critically-acclaimed, fearless, provocative productions such as Phaedra and Zeroville. ORPHEUS is an Australian gothic retelling of the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice - a play about a town that just won't let you go. ORPHEUS will show a new side of one of Sydney's newest theatre venues, The World Bar's Blood Moon Theatre.

Starring Dymphna Carew, Curly Fernandez, Victoria Greiner, Lana Kershaw, Daniel Monks, Bodelle de Ronde and Michael Yore. Live music by the cast.

Directed by Michael Dean. Producers: Michael Dean and Alixandra Kupcik. Assistant Director/Dramaturg: Jasper Garner Gore. Designer: Catherine Steele. Lighting Designer: Liam O'Keefe. Movement Director: Rachel Weiner. Photographer: Sasha Cohen.

Director/Producer Michael Dean on his approach to the Orpheus myth: "This is the most diverse cast we've ever had. Four of us are mixed-race, and everyone has a story of being from somewhere else and the pain involved in trying to go home again. There is nothing more Australian. Our unique process, drawing from personal experiences, means that our Orpheus is a distinctly and honestly Australian version of this classic tale."

Performer Daniel Monks on playing the title role: "I was genuinely surprised to be cast as Orpheus, which, as an actor with a physical disability, could be seen as non-traditional casting for this heroic figure in Greek mythology. However, through the exploration of this character & his story in rehearsals, I have found that my unique life experience affords a deep empathy with Orpheus' struggles with grief, loss & belonging. I'm incredibly excited for the audience to experience this timeless story anew, through Michael Dean's bold, timely vision."

Co-Producer Alixandra Kupcik on why the story resonates: "Through a theatrically diverse lens Orpheus examines the mysticism of humanity, questions our existence and explores the past which, even if we choose to forget, can still haunt us."
