KOLKATA: More than two months after a young woman was gang-raped after being kidnapped from the Salt Lake Sector 5 area, the police placed the chargesheet at a Salt Lake court on Monday.
The government has also appointed Bibhas Chatterjee as its special public prosecutor.
The police have named the four accused as Subhendu Nag, Sourav Dey, Arnab Bera and Subrata Dutta, and have slapped various IPC sections pertaining to gang rape, kidnapping and extortion.
The police indicated that though it has filed the chargesheet in 69 days, it is keeping its option open for a supplementary chargesheet if required.
According to sources, a total of 24 people have been cited as witnesses in this case by the prosecution. The idea to appoint a special counsel on behalf of the state is to ensure that charges are framed quickly and ensure strictest punishment for the accused, officials claimed.
The incident took place on the night of May 29 and it was only the next morning that she could be rescued from near Baishaki complex.
According to the the chargesheet, the survivor had left home in an Uber cab around 11pm on Sunday to visit a coffee shop. She apparently mistook the location and got off near College More at Sector V.
“She said she was confused about the location and thus sought help from a youth, who was standing nearby. The youth reportedly said he did not know exactly where the shop was but would confirm the same from his friends. He then called up someone,” a senior police officer said.

“Soon, three youths arrived in an SUV. They offered her a lift to the coffee shop. As soon as she and the youth from whom she asked for directions got into the car, they sped off. The four allegedly took turns to rape her,” the police officer said.
The complaint stated that around 3am, the youths pushed her out of the car at Baishakhi More in Salt Lake. There, the woman claimed a taxi driver spotted her and took her to Bidhannagar North police station. She was then taken to Salt Lake’s women police station and a complaint was formally lodged.
