CAMP ZAMA, Japan (Aug. 09, 2016) — More than 100 Camp Zama youth and children members participated in U.S. Army Garrison Japan’s Vacation Bible School—an annual community program hosted by the Religious Support Center—held Aug. 1-5 at the installation’s Religious Education Center and Community Activity Center.
This year’s theme was “SonTreasure Island” with a message of love.
“What happened this week was fabulous because the whole theme was about God’s love,” said Jeffrey Frick, Ph.D., Director of Religious Education for Camp Zama.
“We realize God’s love is something very powerful that people need to hear,” he said. “Our families need a lot of love, support and encouragement.”
Each day VBS provided a variety of activities—indoors and outdoors—that included arts and crafts, games, Bible stories and lessons.
Chaplain (Col.) Eric Albertson, command chaplain for U.S. Army Japan, said this is one of the largest community religious support events of the year.
“This is a communal effort to provide our young children with an opportunity to gain a greater appreciation for the Bible as the word of God and to also have some fun at the same time,” said Albertson.
Katelyn Grubbs, 10, said she enjoyed hearing Bible stories and playing games.
“I really enjoyed the games and seeing the snacks that were related to Bible verses,” said Katelyn. “It was important for me to participate so I could learn more about God and make new friends.”
Twins Ava and Aaron King, 7, said they enjoyed getting wet outside during the water games.
Nina Elliot, 9, said she had fun doing arts and crafts.
Frick said the success of the week was significantly due to the many volunteers who supported VBS throughout the week.
Taylor Seaman, VBS volunteer, spoke on the importance of her volunteering.
“It’s really important for me to volunteer because I like being a good role model for the kids and giving them someone big to look up to,” she said. “Plus, it’s just a ton of fun to be out here, interacting with the kids…playing with them…making sure they’re learning and growing this entire week.”
“It’s in giving that we receive,” said Albertson, “because the smiles on the children’s faces are priceless.”
