Days after police arrested a junior boxing champion, Deepak Pahal, in connection with the escape of gangster Jitender Gogi, a national-level gold medal winning athlete has been held in the case.
Police arrested Parveen Pandhi alias Lara (22) from Narela on August 5. “Pandhi is from Sonepat district of Haryana and a 400 metres gold medalist from a national competition held in Madhya Pradesh in 2013,” said a police officer.
Pahal was arrested for helping the gangster escape on July 30. According to police, Pahal was part of a 10-member gang that helped Gogi flee while he was being taken on a bus from Rohini jail in north Delhi to a Sonepat court.
The gang threw chilli powder in the eyes of the policemen escorting Gogi before robbing a gun and cartridges from them, said police.
Sources said Parveen told investigators during questioning that he along with Pahal and another accused, Sanjay alias Falla, were in the Haryana Roadways bus in which Gogi was being taken by the escort party.
Sources said police suspect more sportsmen may be involved in Gogi’s escape.
