FT! @_GBHockey Women's Team get the better of India at #Rio2016 with an impressive performance on 9 Aug.#Hockey pic.twitter.com/iNFQvdNuXp
— Hockey India (@TheHockeyIndia) August 8, 2016
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: It’s a very professional display by the GBR side. They knew exactly what to do. They kept the ball away from the Indians and ensured that they scored goals when it mattered.
Good game. GBR 3-0 India. Opposition coach appreciates the performance of the Indian women. #Rio2016
— Akarsh Sharma (@Akarsh_Official) August 8, 2016
Hockey updates: Great Britain outclass India 3-0 in women’s hockey. India yet to register a win.
Hockey updates: Vandana had a lovely chance to get a consolation goal but the scoop saved by the GBR goalkeeper. It’s all over. GBR wins 3-0.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: India dominating the proceedings. But they are unable to break through. The skills helping them. But GBR too tough in defence physically.
Hockey updates: India still around the fringes of the GBR circle. Their best period in the match with sustained pressure.
Hockey updates: India gets a PC. Their first in the match. That leads to the 2nd one. Can they make the 2nd PC count? No…. the shot is wide.
Hockey updates: The 4th quarter begins, India need to go all out.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: The disappointing part of the Indian team has been a lack of intent from the forwards.
Hockey updates: End of Q3: India 0-3 Great Britain
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: If short passes are not working, throw a few forwards up and go for aerial passes and long hard hits. India needs to try something different. They can’t not do something. There is nothing to lose at this stage.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: India need to stretch the flanks and play the length of the pitch if they have to make any difference. There comes the 3rd PC for GBR but their variation doesn’t really work.
Hockey updates: It’s been a while since India even threatened the GBR defence. They need to think fast. And get their act together. At the moment, GBR is running away with the match. GBR get their 2nd PC but it deflects off wide.
Hockey updates: JUST WIDE! Sophie Bray with a powerful reverse stick shot but it whizzes inches wide.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: Lovely move from Lily Owsley and Danson Alexandra pushes it in past the confused Indian defence. GBR 3-0. India have a huge task ahead.
Hockey updates: GOAL!! GBR make it 3-0 as Alex Danson taps it in. Indian defence really shaky.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: Coach Neil Hawgood has a lot to tell his team. He needs to raise spirits but more than that come up with a plan that can break the hold that GBR has on the match.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: India walk off disappointed. GBR know they can pull off a few goals with the kind of pressure they have created. India seem out of sorts. They really have to take the fight to GBR and for that they need to gamble in the midfield.
Hockey updates: End of Q2: India 0-2 Great Britain.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: Nicola White gets the stick between the Indian defenders and goalkeeper for GBR’s 2nd goal.
GBR lead 2-0. Like in the match against Japan, India are down 0-2. Can they fight back?
Hockey updates: GOAL!! GBR double the lead as Nicola White taps it in from close range.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: Giselle Ansley gets the flick right. It’s low and fast but enough to beat the Indian goalkeeper. GBR lead 1-0. India need to reply.
Hockey updates: GOAL!! Giselle Ansley gives #GBR the lead from the penalty corner. India 0-1 Great Britain.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: Nice move from Lily Owsley. GBR almost had the move but Hannah McLeod getting the ball onto her own feet with only the Indian goalkeeper in front.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: Rani Rampal needs to be a little more aggressive. Try and get the ball to lead the attacks. Forwards appearing a little slow in reacting. Lilima losing a few balls in the midfield which seemed promising as Poonam Rani was in sight on the flank. Moves just not going through.
Hockey updates: India not getting their passing game going. Too many errors from them, giving away the ball a little too easily. There is a need for possession.
Incredibly brave and gutsy performance by @TheHockeyIndia women's team so far. Q1: GBR 0-0 India. GBR ranked 7 in world, India 13 #hockey
— Akarsh Sharma (@Akarsh_Official) August 8, 2016
Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: No great moves yet. But stubborn hockey from both the sides. GBR had a few sharp chances. India had a couple of moves which were promising. But that’s all in the 1st quarter.
Hockey updates: End of quarter 1 : India 0-0 Great Britain**.**
Hockey updates: GBR have gone for a referral. They are asking for a penalty corner. The referee took her time and gave it in India’s favour. No penalty corner. The India’s in the crowd singing Jai he….Jai he….
Hockey updates: Close call for GBR as India stretch their defence. But can’t hold onto the ball. Green card for Namita as she is out for two minutes.
Hockey updates: Frantic hockey at the moment. No great moves created. Both teams trying to use the flanks.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: Great Britain doing exactly what is expected of them – keep the ball away from the Indians. Without the ball, India will struggle to dominate the midfield and create the moves for it’s forwards.
Hockey updates: Great Britain with the first chance of the match but Bray’s reverse stick shot flies just over.
Hockey updates: India’s 2nd match in the Olympics after their 2-2 draw against Japan. If India can pull it off here, a QF spot would definitely open up.

But the hockey team showed they have what it takes to match the best. We will go through to the quarters -- the format takes care of that
— Ashish Magotra (@clutchplay) August 8, 2016
Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: India dominated this match but couldn’t close it. Germany closed it off. This was a killer blow. Sreejesh should have saved that. It came straight onto the pads and went up and into the goal. Shocked Germany delighted with the turn of events. What should have been 1-1 draw and credit to both the teams…has ended in a 2-1 victory for Germany. India are on 3 points after two matches while Germany on six after two wins.
Hockey updates: Full Time – Another heartbreak for India. Sreejesh is absolutely distraught. It ends Germany 2-1 India.
GOAL!! Germany score with seconds to go. They take a 2-1 lead against. TYPICAL GERMANY. THEY HAVE DONE IT. CHRISTOPHER RUHR HAS SCORED. SREEJESH TOOK IT ON THE PADS AND THE BALL WENT IN. IT’S A HEART BREAK FOR INDIA.
So….so close!

Heartbreak for India! Abhinav Bindra misses out on a medal!

Shooting updates: There is drama as we have Abhinav Bindra in shootoff for Bronze medal!
Shooting update: Series 6 underway. Abhinav Bindra scores a 20.2. Currently in 3rd position.
Hockey update: Germany come close and very close but Sreejesh deflects off pads. This is becoming very tense. if India can pull this off, it will be a huge step forward.
Hockey update: Firstpost expert SUndeep Misra: India get a PC. Germany get a yellow card. Ten men for Germany for ten mins. It’s a Sunil run that gives India their 3rd PC.But Rupinder Pal fires over. Oh…what a chance to close the match. Sardar’s deflection just wide of the goalkeeper. Beautiful work from India. But they need the goal.Seven minutes left in the match.
Shooting update: Some not so good news from Trap shooting.

Hockey update: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: End of the 3rd quarter. It’s been India all the way. But it will be a massively tense 4th quarter. Which coach will gamble? Will the teams take chances, exposing their defences for a counter attack? Or will they play safe? 4th quarter is on. If points were given for quarter domination, India would be leading. But in hockey matches are decided by goals. Can India continue dominating.

Hockey update: Germany on the attack now. They are trying to create something here. India defending. And they defend well.
Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: This is a great quarter for India. They have Germany back pedalling. India are controlling the pace. But they need the goals.
Abhinav Bindra’s 10m air rifle Final, Live: India await first Rio Olympics medal – Firstposthttp://www.firstpost.com
Shooting update: Meanwhile, Abhinav Bindra’s Men’s 10m Air Rifle event has begun. Catch the live action on the above link.
Hockey updates: India is attacking all over. Great move by Akashdeep but the flick in is wrong. India need to make this good.
Hockey updates: CHANCE! India get their second penalty corner. Rupinder Pal smashes it to the right but the keeper makes a brilliant save. He then gets into action again with another save.
Hockey updates: The referee has stopped the play and asked both the teams to calm down. He’s spotted a lot of physical play.
Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: Early movement from both teams. India holding the ball well. Raghunath moving up again. This will be a quarter where Germany will switch very fast. India needs to be wary of the bursts of speed from Germany.
Hockey updates: Teams coming back for the 3rd quarter. Interesting quarter coming up. India need to counter with Sunil. He is rattling the German defence. The reigning champions will probably increase penetration and use speed to break the Indian defence which till now hasn’t conceded a single penalty corner.
Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: India have dominated the 2nd quarter with Nikkin wasting a couple of sitters – with only the goalkeeper in front. It could have been different. But India will take courage from this display. Germany will come back strong. They are wary of the Indian pace in the midfield and forward and that’s one reason they are killing the speed in the midfield.
Hockey updates: End of Q2: India 1-1 Germany
Hockey update: Great chance again – Akashdeep flashes a hit across the circle and again Nikkin can’t intercept. Nikkin needs to get his stick in place.
This is good fast #hockey, should suit India, just our defence should hold on German breaks. #Rio2016 #hockey
— Jaspreet Singh Sahni (@JaspreetSSahni) August 8, 2016
Hockey updates: Great opportunity for Nikkin off a pass from Raghunath. But Nikkin can’t hold. This would have been a great goal. But India don’t seize the chance.
Men’s Trap Shooting Update: India’s Kynan Chenai is in the 18th place as he is shooting in his last round with a score of 15 in the last round. His chances of qualifying appear slim
Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: Rupinder Pal Singh…super power in the flick gets the equaliser. India has equalised. We are back to level. India 1 Germany 1. Three goals now in the tournament for Rupinder; two coming in the first match against Ireland.
Hockey updates: GOAL!! Rupinder absolutely smashes it into the net off penalty corner. India 1-1 Germany.
Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: India under pressure. Happens to all teams who concede. But India will do good to come out and take the match to Germany. But at the moment, Germany is taking their own time to create moves. Ramandeep needs to do better. In a match against Germany, you don’t give away the ball. You hold it. And pass right. At the moment, Germany is forcing India to play at their pace.
Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: Germany’s goal comes. Great opportunistic goal from Niklas Wellen. Sreejesh is beaten on the bounce. This is what Germany is good at. They will take their chances with surprise shots when the defence or the goalkeeper feels they have the angles covered. Wellen, a great poacher, gets the opening goal for Germany.
Hockey updates: GOAL!! Germany take the lead. A brilliant finish from Niklas Wellen.
ARCHERY UPDATE: Alexandra Longova beat Laxmirani Majhi 7-1 in the Round of 64 in the Women’s individual archery event
Hockey updates: 2nd quarter begins. This will be crucial. Germany will come out while India might try and defend.
Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: A hard 1st quarter with India having the edge in terms of shots on goal. But Germany always dangerous on the counter.
Hockey updates: End of Q1: India 0-0 Germany. A lively first quarter.
ARCHERY UPDATE: Laxmirani Majhi lost the last set 27-24 to bow out of Rio Olympics 2016
Hockey updates: Christopher Ruhr gets a green card. Germany down to ten men. Can India press on?
ARCHERY UPDATE: 27-27 in the third set. Longova leads the game 3-0
ARCHERY UPDATE: Laxmirani Majhi ties with Alexandra Longova in the third set. Laxmirani Majhi now needs to win the next two sets to force a shootout
Hockey updates: CHANCE! First real threat from India as they break through but Nikkin’s reverse stick shot is blocked by the keeper.
ARCHERY UPDATE: Slovakia Alexandra Longova takes second set 28-26 to take a 4-0 lead in the game. Laxmirani Majhi is spot of bother and needs to win all three remaining sets
ARCHERY UPDATE: Laxmirani Majhi loses first set to Slovakian Alexandra Longova
Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: It was Raghunath who had a great run and the hit straight to the German goalkeeper. India needs to work slowly in to the game. Step by step. Ramandeep gets a hit on the wrist. Painful. He is off for an ice pack. India needs to build. One gets the feeling that Sardar will have to leave his position upfront and come into the midfield. Manpreet is being pushed back in defence leaving the midfield area empty.
Hockey updates: India stretches the German defence but the reigning champions somehow steer it clear.
Hockey updates: The 1st quarter should be tight. Both teams would take a few minutes to settle down and find their bearings. Sunil is a little hasty on the left flank. He needs to make his run if the Germans are to be rattled.
Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: India needs to intercept well. Cut the German passes which will come either half to the flanks. Nobody works the ball as well as they do. India needs to look for deflections in the striking circle.
Hockey Updates: Germany on the offensive. Holding the ball well. A few jitters in the Indian half.
Men’s Trap Shooting Update: Manavjit Singh Sandhu is currently in the 8th place. Top six qualify for the semi-finals
Hockey Updates: And we are underway!
Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: India would be wary of the counter-attacking potential of the Germans while the Germans would be careful of Sardar and Sunil – both players capable of beating the best of defence on pace and speed. Winning this encounter would be a huge boost for India. Sets them up very nicely in the group.
Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: India take on Germany in a classic contest. India’s style vs Germany’s method. The last encounter between India and Germany had ended in a 3-3 draw during the Champions Trophy in London. But these are different times, place and stage. The Olympics always brings out the best in Germany – No wonder they are the reigning champions.
Men’s Trap Shooting Update: Manavjit Singh Sandhu back in contention after scoring perfect 25 in the fourth round
Time for some hockey now as India take on reigning Olympic champions Germany.
Men’s Trap Shooting Update: Manavjit Singh Sandhu is up to 11th place as of now with a score of 86. His fourth round is currently underway

Rio Olympics 2016, Day 3 schedule: India’s Abhinav Bindra, hockey teams in crucial events – Firstposthttp://www.firstpost.com
Welcome welcome welcome!
India had reasons to smile on Day two of Rio Olympics 2016 as Dipa Karmakar created history by reaching the the Final in the Artistic Gymnastic Vault event. Initially Indian Archery team went down fighting to eventual silver-medalist Russia in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Archery event after the Indian Women’s Hockey team came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2. The shooters disappointed again as Heena Sidhu failed to qualify for the final in the 10m air pistol event, while trap shooters Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Kynan Chenai did little to help their qualification cause. On Day Three India’s legendary shooters Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang will look to turn the fortunes of the India shooters as they begin their campaign in the 10m Air Rifle event. The Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams will be in action as they look to build on their positive results. It will also be the day, the Indian swimmers Shivani Kataria and Sajan Prakash make their bow at the Games.
Day three promises to be an action-packed day and Firstpost will bring you all the updates from the happenings in Rio. So stick around for the best from the Games today.
