The North Karnataka districts are facing floods after Maharashtra released water from its dams in view of heavy rains in that state. Hundreds of villages have been inundated in Vijayapura, Raichur, Belagavi, Bagalakote and Yadgiri districts as the Krishna and Bhima Rivers breached their shores.

The district administrations have been instructed to set up relief camps. Incidentally, Karnataka is experiencing deficient rainfall in the northern parts. However, the Alamatti and Narayanapura dams are full, as Maharashtra opened the flood gates of its dams along the border. The government had issued warning to people living in low lying areas of both the dams.

Rescue teams have been deployed to help stranded villagers in all the five districts along the Maharashtra border. The situation is likely to worsen, as heavy rains continue to lash Maharashtra. The government is yet to estimate the loss caused to farmers.
