The government on Monday asserted that there was no shortage of money to fund the national rural employment guarantee scheme (NREGS) and the programme would not be closed down. “Please do not be influenced by any misinformation that is being spread. This government is committed to implementing the NREGS and there is no intention to close it down,” Minister of State for Rural Development Ram Kripal Yadav said in reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

“There is no shortage of money for the programme. The workers are now getting their wages within 15 days in many parts of the country, thanks to the integration of the programme with Direct Benefits Transfer mechanism. In other areas, the money is getting deposited in bank accounts within a maximum of 30 days. In some areas, DBT is still not functioning effectively. So, the wages are still being paid in cash,” he said.

Yadav said the integration with DBT had removed the corruption that was endemic in the programme earlier. “The Prime Minister has already said that NREGS will be implemented with full priority. In fact, it is being implemented more effectively than earlier. This year, we have released more money to the programme that was originally budgeted, and more than in any previous years. So, let there be no confusion. There is no problem of money to fund the programme,” Yadav said.
