'Suicide Squad' welcomes smashing opening weekend at the global box office

Warner Bros' "Suicide Squad" has scored a huge opening weekend, according to measurement company comScore, with the film drawing a total of US$267.1 million at the box office for the weekend of August 7, 2016.

Based on characters from DC Comics such as the Joker and Harley Quinn and starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto among others, the movie posted the biggest August opening ever in both North America and the international box office, across 58 territories in total.

As an added bonus, the film propelled IMAX to its biggest international August debut with US$7.2 million.

Following "Suicide Squad" in the global box office stakes was Universal's "The Secret Life Of Pets" with US$80.2 million, the Shiji Changlong film "Time Raiders" on US$64.6 million, and the action blockbuster "Jason Bourne" which drew US$43.6 million this weekend. The new comedy "Bad Moms" from STX Entertainment rounded out the top five international box office films (by volume of sales), at US$17.1 million.
