Brahmarakshas Review: Barring a few glitches, Krystle D'Souza's show manages to impress
Supernatural is back but this time with a twist. You don't get to see naagins and daayans in this one, but a brahmarakshas (in simpler terms - a monster) who directs his anger towards newly-wed brides. The reason behind his fury is answered in the opening scene of the show which takes you back to the day when Kishwer Merchantt (Aparajita) and Parag Tyagi (Brahmarakshas), a newly married couple, come to Kamalpura after their wedding.

The signs of omen can be seen when the lights go off with the bride's entry in the house (glitch no. 1). And the viewers witness the first twist in the tale when Aparajita pushes her groom from the balcony of the haveli. Brutally, she throws her chooda (red bangles worn by newlywed women) and pours liquor on him, while telling him how she married him for property. When he finally falls from the branch, Parag is devoured by an animal in the jungle.

After 20 years, the story shifts to another rich family (trust us, they don't show them poor ever) where Charu Mehra (Rakhi), who is the daughter of Shailesh Datar and Rakshanda Khan (Mohini Nigam), is all set to get engaged to Sahil Uppal (Ajay). Aham Sharma (Rishabh) is Rakhi's brother and his love-hate relationship with Rakhi's best friend, Krystle D'Souza (Raina) takes quite a lot of screen space. Krystle D'Souza's entry with rose petals and Hindi music is clichéd and filmy (glitch no 2).

Post the engagement, the groom's family suggests Kamalpura as the destination for the wedding, which is fixed 10 days hence. Moreover, they also plan to buy the land which is already famous for its ghost stories and see it as a potential place to attract tourists. While Rakshanda Khan is the only one who senses danger, others humorously talk about Brahmarakshas, an animal possessed with human's spirit.

Taking a local train, the entire family travels to Kamalpura (glitch no 3 - the family is rich, isn't it?!). In a sequence, Rishabh and Raina miss the train at one of the stations, they also find Mishti and Shyam (Mridul Das) off the train (married 6 months before, they get off the train deliberately to spend some time together). The two couples take to the jungle, considered an unsafe route, to reach Kamalpura. While Rishabh and Raina reach safely due to the ‘kamal’ given to Raina by the driver of the cab, Mishti and Shyam, in all innocence, go to the cursed haveli for spending a night. The owner of the haveli lets them stay for a night, but on seeing Mishti in all the accessories adorned by the newly-weds, he turns into a brahmarakshas. Killing the two, he possesses Shyam's body and is now out in the open, acting as a danger to the family who has arrived for the wedding in the village. The Brahmarakshas is no one else but Aparajita's husband.
The show definitely has a gripping storyline, and the viewers just don't know what to expect next. It's fast-paced, edgy and doesn't give you time to think. Krystle D'Souza fits her part, and plays a pivotal role in the story not just as Rakhi's best friend, but also as Ajay's sister. Kishwer Merchantt deserves a special mention as she is excellent in the negative role.

Aham Sharma also manages to impress with his spontaneity on screen. Rakshanada Khan, who is back to the small screen after a long gap, makes up for her absence with this show. Essaying the role of a fraught mother, she looks at ease with her character.
What might not click with the viewers are the illogical scenes. Just when everyone knows that Kamalpura is an unsafe destination, they all head to the place with no qualms at all. When Rishabh, Raina, Mishti and Shyam decide to take to the jungle to reach Kamalpura, it makes no sense as it equates to calling trouble. Also, the appearance of brahmakshas could have been better.
Despite the flaws, we give it a three star out of five, as the show has got immense potential in terms of its plot, which might sustain the interest of the audience in the long run.
Brahmarakshas airs on Zee TV every weekend at 9 pm.
