2017 polls: In Unnao, Sheila Dikshit recalls UP roots, promises ‘change’

Highlighting the development projects undertaken in Delhi during her regime as Chief Minister, Dikshit said she has now came to UP with the same vision.

SLAMMING THE ruling Samajwadi Party government over “deteriorating law and order situation” and the rise in crimes against women, Congress chief ministerial candidate for Uttar Pradesh Assembly Polls Sheila Dikshit on Sunday there was a “need for change” in UP and she aspires to facilitate that change in her “home state”.

“Since the time the Congress government lost power in the state, the situation in UP has been deteriorating…The youngsters do not have employment today, farmers do not get the money due to them, and even our women do not get the respect they deserve. The situation has deteriorated everywhere,” Dikshit told party workers while inaugurating a Seva Dal camp in Unnao.

Highlighting the development projects undertaken in Delhi during her regime as Chief Minister, Dikshit said she has now came to UP with the same vision. “Congress will deal with backwardness of the state during the past 27 years,” she said.

The 78-year-old Congress leader also attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his foreign tours, which she said, do no good for the country.

“Most of the time our Prime Minister lives in foreign countries and makes news. But his visits do not benefit the country in any way…He has made a lot of promises during polls but they were not fulfilled,” Dikshit said.

Festive offer

Amid allegations from Opposition parties that she is an outsider, Dikshit clarified that she was born in Punjab but belonged to Unnao, as it was the place of her in-laws, the three-time Delhi Chief Minister said she had started her political career from Kannauj when she was elected its MP.

Earlier in the day, Dikshit garlanded the statue of her father-in-law and Congress veteran leader Uma Shakar Dikshit as well as a statue of Lal Bahadur Shashtri.

Sheila was accompanied by her son Sandeep Dikshit. Sources said that while Sheila was busy with meeting party workers, Sandeep visited their ancestral village, Ugu. Later in the evening, Sheila returned to Lucknow, where she is scheduled to meet party workers and locals over the next two days.
