Eljero Elia's hat-trick helped Feyenoord win 5-0 at FC Groningen on the opening weekend of the Eredivisie.

The forward hit his treble either side of half-time after Tonny Vilhena had opened the scoring in the 19th minute, knocking in the rebound after Elia's shot had been saved.

Nicolai Jorgensen completed the rout on his Eredivisie debut seven minutes from time.

Ajax also made a winning start as they recorded a 3-1 victory at newly-promoted Sparta Rotterdam.

Davy Klaassen headed the opener but an own goal by Nemanja Gudelj levelled things up with just eight minutes played.

Daley Sinkgraven restored Ajax's lead after half-time before summer signing Mateo Casierra marked his debut with a goal to seal all three points. Joel Veltman was sent off late on but the visitors were never troubled with 10 men.

Willem Huizing also received a red card midway through the second half of Heerenveen's 2-2 draw at AZ Alkmaar but his team still managed to rescue a point.
