Abu Dhabi: Al Wahda were on Sunday on the verge of signing “a European and global superstar” to complete their four-strong foreign quota and signal their intent to challenge for honours in the new UAE football season.

A statement on the Clarets’ website said that the Abu Dhabi club had reached an agreement with the Turkish Super Lig outfit Bursaspor to sign their 29-year-old winger Balazs Dzsudzsak for €3 million (Dh12.2m).

The 82-times-capped Hungary captain, who scored twice for his country at Euro 2016 earlier this summer, was on Sunday in Abu Dhabi to undergo a medical ahead of a proposed two-year deal.

“He is a European and global superstar with considerable experience, who gave high levels of performance at the European Championship in France,” the club statement said.

As Gulf News reported last week, Al Wahda had targeted Dzsudzsak before Euro 2016 and reignited their interest in him following a failed swoop for the Brazilian forward Tiago Alves.

Al Wahda were desperate to fill the fourth spot in their foreign quota for the new season after sensationally missing out on the signing of Alves, 23, who they paraded as their new recruit late last month.

But in a dramatic development last Tuesday, the Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal revealed they had signed the Brazilian forward — who spent last season on loan at South Korea’s Seongnam FC from parent club Penapolense — on a three-year deal.

Dzsudzsak’s impending arrival represents a significant coup for boss Javier Aguirre, who beat off competition for the Hungarian star from the German Bundesliga pair of Schalke 04 and Hertha Berlin.

Aguirre had been determined to add a greater attacking edge to the Arabian Gulf Cup holders, leading to him offloading defensive midfielder Denilson, 28, to Cruzeiro on a six-month loan.

Dzsudzsak is able to play on both flanks and made his name on the left as a youngster at Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven, before a transfer to then big-spending Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala worth a reported 20 million euros (Dh82.3 million) in June 2011.

An injury-plagued stint ended a year later with a 19 million euro (Dh78.17 million) move to Dynamo Moscow, where he scored 13 times in 112 appearances before heading to Turkey for just 1.6 million euros (Dh6.6 million) in August 2015.

He scored three times for Bursaspor in 23 appearances for the Turkish Super Lig side last season.

Wahda’s non-Emirati contingent currently features 25-goal Arabian Gulf League top-scorer Sebastian Tagliabue, the Chile playmaker Jorge Valdivia and the South Korea centre-back Rim Chang-woo.

Elsewhere, Gulf News understands that Al Jazira are in “intensive negotiations” to sign the Belgium defensive midfielder Steven Defour, 28, from Anderlecht.

The English Premier League side Burnley had also been interested in Defour, who has 46 caps for his country, after being frustrated in their attempts to sign Cheick Tiote from Newcastle United.

They made their first foreign swoop of the summer at the end of last month with the capture of the Moroccan attacking Mbark Boussoufa from Lokomotiv Moscow.

The Pride of Abu Dhabi have also confirmed the sacking of the sporting director they hired only last December, Gianluca Nani, for “failing to develop the club in line with the desire to maintain its profile as a top professional club”.

Meanwhile, Sharjah are poised to make their third signing of the summer from Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal in the form of the 31-year-old Brazilian striker Ailton.

He would replace his compatriot Wanderley Santos, who has joined Al Nasr, and be reunited with his former boss Giorgos Donis and the central defender Digao.

Sharjah had already recruited the lethal Al Ittihad striker, Gelmin Rivas, as they target a vast improvement on last season’s 11th-place finish in the 14-team Arabian Gulf League.

The 27-year-old Venezuelan was the second-best goalscorer in the Saudi Professional League last season with 19 goals.
